Here in Florida, because of our long, hot summers, folks realize the importance of ceiling fans in their home. And while for years ceiling fan technology stayed relatively consistent, now with the introduction of DC motors, there are many new and interesting options that will increase comfort while decreasing one’s electric bill.
Here’s a few points to help you decide if a ceiling fan with a DC motor is right for you:
DC Motors are up to 70% more efficient and, because they run cooler, can have a much longer lifespan than traditional AC fans.
DC motors allow for up to six speeds and a reverse function as opposed to three speed AC fans.
The motors on DC fans are “brushless” which makes for quieter operation for the life of the fan.
Their compact size means they are usually lighter for easier installation.
Smaller DC motors allow for companies to explore new designs that weren’t possible with the old AC “pancake” motors.
The only downside that we have seen is that, because of the added electronics, a conventional hardwired fan control will not work with these fans. Instead a wall mounted transmitter must be used to control them.
